She grew up in a land of superstition, violence, social backwardness, ruled by an aristocracy that ranged from ruthless kings to demented landlords; she witnessed public executions and drunken family orgies since she was a child. The content didn’t follow any logical timeline or pattern; the author jumped from Erzsebet and her crimes to pages of family and European history much of it not relevant to the topic interspersed with the author’s own biases.

This was a bit like pulling teeth for me to get through. I picked it up again a few days ago to get it off my book to-do list.
